10 Things That Attract the Opposite Sex Like a Magnet

What kind of people are considered the most attractive? Blue-eyed blonde women and dark-haired men with a beard? Maybe so. But there are other criteria that are not so obvious. Scientists from different countries are constantly doing research to find out what men and women like about each other. In this article, we will tell you about these things.

The Bright Side team is convinced that attractiveness is determined by more than just appearance. In this article, you will also learn about some personal characteristics that attract the opposite sex.

1. Facial expression
In 2011, scientists tried to find out what facial expressions attracted men and women to the opposite sex. More than 1,000 people took part in the research. Every person was shown pictures of people with completely different emotions.

This helped them to find out that men are more attracted to happy women — those who smile and have happy eyes. Women love men with proud faces.

Scientists also learned that these conclusions match the evolutionary and cultural norms.

2. Active body language
In 2016, scientists watched people during speed dating. This helped them learn that both men and women prefer partners with active body language. The respondents wanted to see such people again.

The same goes for photos. Both men and women consider people who were captured in motion more attractive than those who were photographed still.

3. Smell
The aromas from the body and from perfume can either attract or repel a person. And despite the fact that the smell of garlic destroys a romantic atmosphere, the food can actually be helpful for men.

Scientists found that women are attracted to the smell of men who have eaten garlic. However, it doesn’t work the other way round. According to scientists, they enjoy the smell of tasty foods, such as donuts or popcorn. So, girls who want to charm a man should choose sweet-smelling perfumes.

4. A similarity
with parents of the opposite sexBritish scientists found that women are often attracted to men who have the same eye color as their fathers. The same goes for men: they often choose women who look similar to their mothers.

Of course, this rule doesn’t always work. But people with such similarities have more chances of a successful relationship.

5. Hair
Men are mostly attracted to women with long hair. According to scientists, this is because of evolution. Because if a woman has long hair, it grows fast, so she is probably healthy enough to raise a child.

Women, however, are not so fixated on men’s hair. Most of the time this is a matter of taste: some like men with long hair, some like men with short hair. And these preferences can change throughout their lifetime.

6. Pets
In their experiment, Israeli scientists asked men to evaluate themselves with text descriptions. Some of the men had dogs, and others didn’t. And every time there was a dog in a story, the man seemed more attractive to the woman. Scientists think that this can be explained by the fact that having a pet means that a man is serious and ready for a long-term relationship.

For men, it doesn’t seem to matter if a woman has a pet or not.

7. Music
In 2014, scientists asked 1,500 women to listen to several songs: some of them were complicated and some were simple. The complexity level was determined by the number of chords used in a song. After that, the participants of the experiment were supposed to say which of the songs seemed the most attractive. Most women preferred complicated music. More than that, they said that they would choose men who composed these songs.

Such experiments have not been conducted with men. So, it’s impossible to say if there is any connection between the attractiveness of a woman and her musical taste.

8. Approximately equal attractiveness
Do you often see couples where one of the partners is way more attractive than the other? Believe it or not, this doesn’t happen often. Scientists found that both men and women are more inclined to choose a partner who is pretty much as attractive as they are.

But the people who are more attractive are pickier: they tend to spend more time looking for attractive partners. They do it subconsciously. And of course, there are certain exceptions.

9. Altruism
Altruistic behavior is another thing that attracts both women and men. Scientists think that this is a genetic feature: altruistic behavior indicates that a person will probably be a caring parent and are likely to pass their genes to the next generation.

10. Shoe size
Men are more inclined to look for smaller partners. So, they are attracted by a small shoe size.

Women are not so straightforward. They like both men with big shoe sizes and smaller ones. It’s all about the goal a woman pursues.

Because of evolution, people always try to look for the best partner because they have the best genes. So, of course, tall handsome men have the upper hand. But for a long-term relationship, it is important that a partner will take care of a woman and won’t break up with her. And according to women, men of average height and smaller shoe size will play this role better than anyone.
